Madhya Pradesh Police landed on serial killer Maniram Sen's trail after a disfigured body was found near Sukhi Sewania village on the outskirts of Bhopal last November.

Bhopal Police in Madhya Pradesh has arrested a serial killer who is suspected to have killed six people after luring them with stories about a mythical hidden treasure. According to officials, the suspect duped people on the pretext of offering them a share in a treasure he knew how to find. He then murdered his lenders in cold blood to avoid paying them back.

The matter first came to light on November 8 of last year when police found a disfigured body near Sukhi Sewania village on the outskirts of Bhopal. Later identified as one Adil Wahav, the victim's face had been crushed with a stone in an attempt to conceal his identity.

With no witnesses to the crime, the Bhopal Police were faced with a daunting task. Preliminary investigation along with the interrogation of as many as 74 people, including the victim's family and friends, revealed that one Maniram Sen had borrowed Rs 17,000 from him by luring him with the promise of a hidden treasure.

When Sen was unable to present any concrete evidence to prove the existence of such a treasure, the victim started demanding his money back. This is when Maniram Sen summoned the victim to the Sukhi Sewania village and asked him to sit in one place for the purpose of a 'ritual'. The suspect then attacked Adil and disfigured his face to avoid identification.

After he committed the heinous crime, Sen fled the spot. The Sukhi Sewania police station even declared a reward of Rs 20,000 in exchange for any information about the blind murder.

Informers led the Madhya Pradesh Police to Maniram who was hiding in Rahatgarh in MP's Sagar district after spending some time in Allahabad. A trap was laid and led to Sen's arrest. During interrogation, Maniram Sen confessed to Adil's murder and told police about other crimes he had committed.

Police also found out that Maniram Sen had used the same modus operandi to dupe five other people of their money before murdering them in cold blood.

A resident of Gyaraspur village in MP's Vidisha district, Maniram Sen was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2000 for the murder of five people. He was released in 2017.
