Australia lost David Warner early but debutant Will Pucovski and Marnus Labuschagne displayed some brilliant Test batting to help the hosts post 166/2 versus India on Day 1 of the third Test.

Australia lost their experienced opener David Warner in the 4th over itself but debutant Will Pucovski and Marnus Labuschagne showed why they are the future of Australian cricket by partnering for 100 runs and making sure that the pumped up visitors don't have an early advantage on Day 1 of the crucial third Test match at Sydney. Labuschangne and Steve Smith were looking solid when Australia ended Day 1 on 166/2.

Earlier, Mohammed Siraj was emotional and in tears when the national anthem was played ahead of the match but once he got the red cherry in his hand, he returned back in his elements. Siraj, playing in his 2nd Test, removed David Warner for 5 before putting his finger on his lips to celebrate the dismissal.

However, Team India's lips were the one to be zipped later, as Pucovski and Labuschangne joined hands to put some great Test batting on display. While the former looked comfortable in his big debut, Labuschagne was oozing with confidence throughout his Day 1 innings.

India vs Australia Day 1 Highlights

India's Test debutant Navdeep Saini was given a late go in the 31st over but Will Puckovski smashed two back to back boundaries to hit a 97-ball fifty to announce his arrival at the biggest stage. Labuschage looked animated and even made a hand gesture towards Ashwin, suggesting that he was all set for the off-spinner.

India had their chance, most of them involving wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant but they were missed one after the other. Pucovski was dropped on 26 and then 32 by Pant. The 21-year-old later survived a run-out chance when Jasprit Bumrah fumbled and fell while attempting a throw from extra cover region.

Saini dismissed Pucovski (62) in the 35th over after bowling a fast and full delivery which the right-hander missed completely. The Victoria-born looked convinced that he was trapped in front of the stumps and left without wasting any review.

Steve Smith joined Labuschagne and another 50-plus run partnership was stitched. There was a good contest between Ashwin and the two Aussie batsmen but no further wickets fell. At the time of stumps, Labuschagne was unbeaten on 67, while Steve Smith was also looking well set on 31 not out.
