England captain Joe Root started 2021 in style and smashed a hit a fluent hundred on Day 2 of the 1st Test match between Sri Lanka and England at Galle.

England captain Joe Root has followed his contemporaries Kane Williamson and Steve Smith and started 2021 in style. On Day 2 of the 1st Test match against Sri Lanka at Galle, Root, who recently celebrated his 30th birthday, completed his 18th Test hundred. He took a single off Dilruwan Perera on the 163rd ball of his innings to reach the three-digit mark, his first in 13 months in the longest format.

Notably, New Zealand captain Kane Williamson scored a double ton in his first Test innings of the years, whereas, Australia batting mainstay Steve Smith kicked start his 2021 with a hundred against India in the the recently-concluded SCG Test.

The skipper fought hard for his 100 and scored only 7 fours before reaching to the milestone.

With this century at Galle, Joe Root has also become the first England to score more than one Test hundred in Sri Lanka. Root's last hundred came against New Zealand in Hamilton. He also equalled Ian Bell’s record of the second-most fifty-plus scores in Tests for England.

In 15 innings prior to the current one, Root hit three fifties but failed to convert it into hundreds. Also, Joe Root scored an unbeaten 74 in the intra-squad match after arriving in Sri Lanka.

After bundling out hosts Sri Lanka for 135 in the first innings, England have taken a lead of over 150 runs already on Day 2 of the Galle Test match. Joe Root has partnered with debutant Dan Lawrence and stitched an unbeaten 170-run partnership at the time this report was published.
