Gullak Season 2 premieres on SonyLiv on January 15. The TVF series stars Geetanjali Kulkarni, Jameel Khan, Harsh Mayar and Vaibhav Raj Gupta.

The Mishra family is back with their disagreements and emotional moments in Gullak Season 2. The mini-series is a treasure trove of heart-warming anecdotes that gets you hooked and leaves you wanting for more.

The first season of Gullak came in 2019 and nothing much has changed in the last two years in the Mishra family. Annu and Aman Mishra continue to bicker over trivial things, Mr Mishra still works in the electricity department and loves to listen to Ravish's news, while Mrs Shanti Mishra continues to serve tehri every alternate day, which the family often terms as aloo wale peele chawal or disappointment, along with her impeccable sarcasm.

While Season 1 was directed by Amrit Raj Gupta and written by Nikhil Vijay Motghare, Gullak Season 2 has been directed by Palash Vaswani and written by Durgesh Singh. Set in a quaint town of North India, the Mishras can pass off as any middle-class family with its relatable characters and subtle humour. Narrated from the perspective of an earthen piggybank aka gullak (hence, the title), the series revolves around a middle-class family's aspirations and imperfect relationships.

As the gullak (Shivankit Singh Parihar) says, this series is about "kisse" (anecdotes) and not "kahaniyaan" (stories). You understand this after watching the 10 episodes of Season 1 and 2. And in every episode, the makers reiterate that fact in the theme song where Anurag Saikia hums "Yeh zindagi yaadon ki gullak ki (life is a piggybank of memories)." The music of the series earns it some extra brownie points.

From the old trunk with a vintage photo tucked in its flap to the 'neg register', the show will take you down memory lane. What's a neg register? For the ones who've been brought up in North India, every family has this register that includes names of people who attended their family's wedding, along with what did they gifted as neg (blessing) to the newlyweds. Was it Rs 51, 101 or a wristwatch - everything is noted down. The register gets updated during weddings and whenever there's an invitation, the family looks it up and come up with a neg accordingly.

The realistic storytelling succeeds in bringing a wide smile in one instance, while manages to get you all emotional in another. The five-episode series wins its viewers over with unconventional narrative. The cast remains the same with Jameel Khan, Geetanjali Kulkarni, Vaibhav Raj Gupta and Harsh Mayar in lead roles, with Sunita Rajwar as a recurring character, Bittu ki mummy. The ensemble cast equally contributes to making the series an interesting watch.

Geetanjali Kulkarni is brilliant as Shanti Mishra, who is often heard yelling at her sons and leaving them speechless with her sarcastic remarks. Jameel Khan plays the regular middle-class man working in a government office, always falling short of cash, who sometimes worries about the rising electricity bill and sometimes about his brother-in-law not mentioning 'sahparivaar' in the wedding invitation card. After failing to crack the Staff Selection Commission exams, the older son, Annu (Vaibhav Raj Gupta), is now seen flattering the local political leader to get a gas agency. The younger, Aman Mishra (Harsh Mayar), is struggling to prepare for his board exams, as cricket wavers his attention. On the other hand, Bittu ki mummy (Sunita Rajwar) continues to entertain the Mishra family with her antics.

Similar to Season 1, the second season also shows the Mishras and their share of struggles. But despite all that, the Mishras are a close-knit unit. Kulkarni, Khan, Mayar and Gupta's amazing on-screen chemistry doesn't let the viewers realise that these are just actors playing their parts. Instead, it seems like they've been living with each other forever.

With just five episodes of 30 minutes each, Gullak Season 2 is can be easily binge-watched in a day. If you've loved TVF's Yeh Meri Family, Kota Factory and Panchayat, this one deserves a watch.
