Agroup of para-teachers attempted to cross the Adhiganga canal located behind West Bengal Chief Minister’s residence at Kalighat in Kolkata to protest against low wages. The incident took place on Tuesday morning.

Since then, security has been beefed up in the area and at least six people have been arrested.

A section of para-teachers has been sitting on a dharna outside Bikash Bhawan, the education minister’s office in Kolkata since December 8 last year. They are demanding a fixed salary structure parallel to the ones received by their counterparts in other states.

Earlier this month, CM Mamata Banerjee had announced a three per cent annual pay hike for para-teachers in the state budget. However, the agitators claimed that the figure was too little and would not change their issues.

Following the incident on Tuesday morning, a host of top police officials, including Kolkata Police Commissioner Soumen Mitra rushed to the spot, where security has been beefed up. A total of six persons have been arrested.
