Hospitals, overwhelmed by the surge in Covid-19 positive patients, said they were in crisis, with most hospitals full and running out of medical oxygen to treat critical patients.

A total of 2,812 Covid-19 patients died due to the infection, according to health ministry data, taking total coronavirus fatalities to 1,95,123. Maximum casualties were reported in Maharashtra (832), followed by Delhi with 350 daily deaths. 53.18 per cent of the new cases are reported from these five states, with Maharashtra (66,191 cases) alone responsible for 18.75 per cent of the new cases.

A total of 27,93,21,177 samples have been tested so far; of these, 14,02,367 samples were tested on Sunday, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) said. Coronavirus in India LIVE Updates

This is the fifth straight day that India has registered over 3 lakh Covid-19 cases and over 2,000 deaths. India has been recording a daily rise of more than 2 lakh cases since April 15.

The top five states which have registered maximum cases are Maharashtra with 66,191 cases, Uttar Pradesh with 35,311 cases, Karnataka with 34,804 cases, Kerala with 28,469 cases and Delhi with 22,933 cases.

Delhi recorded 350 Covid-19 deaths on Sunday as a few hospitals struggled to arrange continuous supply of oxygen. Delhi recorded 22,933 cases with a positivity rate of 30.21 per cent on Sunday. This is the fourth day on the trot that Delhi has recorded over 300 deaths due to coronavirus.

Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal has announced extension of the ongoing lockdown in Delhi for another week, saying the severity of Covid-19 is unabated and the positivity rate has been as high as 36 per cent in the last few days. The lockdown imposed on April 19 night will now continue till 5 am on May 3.

Dehradun authorities have imposed a week-long curfew from Monday evening to tackle the surge in coronavirus cases. The curfew will begin at 7 pm on Monday and go on till 5 am on May 3.

Noting that the second wave of Covid-19 is testing people's patience and their limit to bear pain, PM Narendra Modi, in his monthly Mann ki Baat broadcast, said that this "toofan" (storm) has shaken the country after it was full of spirit and self-confidence after successfully tackling the first wave.

A fire broke out at Ayush Hospital in Gujarat's Surat on Monday morning. As many as 16 critical Covid-19 patients were rescued and shifted to safer places. No casualty was reported due to the blaze.

Four patients died at a private hospital in Haryana's Rewari on Sunday allegedly due to a shortage of medical oxygen following which the district administration launched an investigation to ascertain the reason behind the deaths.

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Sunday announced free Covid vaccination for everyone in the state above the age of 18. Maharashtra, too, announced free vaccination for all its citizens. Starting May 1, the Gujarat government will also provide free of cost Covid-19 vaccines to those between 18 and 45 years of age.

The UK, US and Canada have extended help to India as the Covid-19 crisis continues to worsen in the country.
