Hyderabad: Following heavy rains that lashed the city in the last few days, heavy inflows were registered in several water bodies including Saroornagar Lake, Bairamalguda Cheruvu, Malkam Cheruvu and Ramanthapur Lake.

As the surplus water from some of these lakes gushed on to the roads, different wings of the city administration took up required measures and the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) attended to over 700 related grievances in last two days.

The grievances included water logging, tree falls, potholes, overflowing sewage, etc. and the civic body staffers, monsoon action teams and Disaster Response Force (DRF) teams and those from municipalities surrounding the city were pressed into service in low lying areas that were inundated.

At these places, the authorities have been diverting the water from low-lying areas into nearest water bodies. At places where the water drained out, sanitation works were taken up immediately. The silt and garbage accumulated due to rains was also removed.

Panchavati Colony in Manikonda, Siddiq Nagar in Hitec City, Anjaiah Nagar in Gachibowli and NBT Nagar in Road no 12 Banjara Hills were some places where works were taken up to drain out the water. In LB Nagar zone that was most affected due to rains, walls of open plots had to be demolished and temporary water channels and vents were set up to drain out water.

In the same zone, Kodandaram Nagar, Sisala Basti and VV Nagar Bus Stop were some places where water drained out on its own by Friday morning following which cleaning of the locality commenced. “While sanitation activities were underway, food was also distributed to the needy,” said H Krishnaiah, GHMC Deputy Commissioner, Saroornagar circle.

However, pumping out works were taken at Mansoorabad Old Village and Kasturi Colony in Hasthinapuram as the water did not recede by Friday afternoon.

To end the issues pertaining to urban flooding in Saroornagar ward and Nagole ward, five box drains were being planned here. In a meeting held here on Friday, Mayor G Vijaya Laxmi asked the GHMC officials to float tenders within a week to construct these drains. The meeting was also attended by the corporators of these two wards. She also inspected the water affected areas in these localities.

Hussain Sagar inches away from full tank level

Following heavy rains, Hussain Sagar has been getting steady inflows and the water level almost touched the full tank level (FTL). On Friday evening, the water level at the water body was recorded at 513.38 m against the FTL of 513.41 m.

Friday’s inflows were less compared to Thursday and Wednesday, officials said.
The GHMC)officials said there was no need to panic and an official added, “Measures such as clearing the trash accumulated at the entry and outlet nalas and ensuring free flow of water flow downstream are underway.”

The situation was being closely monitored. “We are constantly monitoring the inflows and updating the revenue and irrigation departments. People need not worry as water level has dropped on Friday,” the official said.

Meanwhile the water levels at Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar also almost touched their respective FTLs. At 6 pm today, the water level at Osman Sagar was recorded as 1,784.50 feet against the FTL of 1,790 feet, while the water level at Himyat Sagar was recorded as 1,761.50 feet against the FTL of 1,763.50 feet.

Hyderabad witnesses light showers on Friday

Hyderabad witnessed light showers at isolated places on Friday and maximum temperature recorded in the city was 29.2 degree Celsius, around 2 degree Celsius less than normal.

Many localities in the GHMC experienced light showers. The area surrounding Indiranagar Community Hall, Tarnaka, recorded the highest rainfall of 6.5 mm, followed by Marredpally which witnessed 2.5 mm rainfall. Few other areas, including Uppal, Rajendranagar and Balanagar also experienced very light showers.

As per the forecast by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Hyderabad, the city will witness light to moderate showers at isolated places. Also the forecast looks at the city witnessing heavy rains again after July 19. During the next three days, the maximum temperatures in the city are expected to be in the range of 29 degree Celsius to 31 degree Celsius, whereas the minimum temperatures to be between 20 to 22 degree Celsius.
Several districts including Karimnagar, Adilabad, Nizamabad, Jagtial, Khammam and Wanaparthy received light to moderate rainfall on Friday.
