Tax experts have identified a number of issues in the new income tax e-filing portal even as the finance ministry's September 15 deadline to fix glitches ended.

Glitches in the new Income Tax e-filing portal remain even as the deadline given by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to Infosys for fixing issues ended on September 15.

Infosys was tasked with developing the new tax filing portal, but it encountered several glitches soon after it went live on June 7. Many people have been unable to file their tax returns as a result.

The glitches have caused significant delays in the tax filing process and the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) recently extended the due date for filing Income Tax Returns for the assessment year 2021-22 to December 31, 2021.

GLITCHES REMAIN

This suggests that glitches may remain in the tax portal for a longer period. It may be noted that many meetings have been held over the glitches and the finance minister has publicly expressed disappointment over the issues.

Meanwhile, millions of taxpayers have voiced their concerns on social media as they have not been able to file tax returns. Tax experts said many features such as the pre-filled forms for interest payments on FD and others are still not updated.

WHAT ARE THE REMAINING GLITCHES?

As per tax experts, nearly 40 per cent of the glitches remain. Some tax experts who used the portal to check various functions said the website continues to face multiple glitches.

It has been over three months since the portal was launched, but users are unable to submit rectification for returns filed, check refund status and file refund reissue requests. Many users are also unable to see income tax returns filed prior to the assessment year 2013-14.

In August, the finance ministry had even summoned Infosys CEO Salil Parekh to explain why the new portal was facing glitches. Nirmala Sitharaman expressed “deep disappointment” over the glitches and gave a deadline till September 15 to rectify all the issues.

The glitches in the tax filing portal could become a worry for taxpayers who have paid self-assessment tax are not able to file ITR. It is worth mentioning that they are still required to pay interest at 1 per cent per month for delay in ITR filing.

Nangia & Co LLP partner Shailesh Kumar told news agency PTI that the portal is still evolving with changes in modules of e-filing of ITR form.

"On some days, the portal works fine, on some other days, it faces technical glitches in some of the modules,” he said.

"Even though the functioning has improved over past few weeks, but still problems persist making it difficult for some taxpayers while filing the ITR," Kumar added.

Tax and consulting firm AKM Global's Director — Tax and Regulatory, Sandeep Sehgal told the news agency that some improvement has been seen but problems still persist.

Besides the problems mentioned above, there is no auto-population of Form 16 in case of salary income, no option available for any rectification online and even the outstanding demand is not visible in some cases.

In addition, refund status is not available in some cases and grievances filed on the old portal have not been updated on the new portal, Sehgal added.

There are a host of other issues that have been spotted by tax experts. Moreover, the site still remains slow.
