The Indian Premier League (IPL) Governing Council meeting is set to be held on Tuesday (January 11). In the meeting, the schedule of the 2022 season, mega-auction, as well as the venues are set to be discussed.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS

  • The IPL GC meeting will be held today over the preparations for the new season
  • The IPL 2022 auction is to be held next month in Bengaluru but could be postponed
  • The IPL could also be taken on UAE, like the previous two seasons

The Indian Premier League (IPL) Governing Council is set to meet today at 12:30 PM IST to discuss various aspects of the 15th edition of the league. The league was expected to see the auction take place in Bengaluru next month while the new season was expected to begin in the first week of April. However, the schedule is likely to undergo a major change considering the Covid-19 situation in the country.

From the auction ahead of the 2022 season to the venues where the league will be held, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) hasn't fixated on any point. While most details pertaining to the new season were expected to be fixed by now, the arrival of the third wave of coronavirus has put the board's initial plans in jeopardy.

Points to be discussed in IPL GC meeting today:

IPL 2022 auction: It is not yet known whether the auction will be postponed or not. The matter is one of the first ones that is expected to be brought to the table when the discussion starts. Presently, the auction is slated to be held between 11-13 February in Bengaluru. It also has to be noted that this is a mega auction, which will be held for two days.

IPL 2022 venue: The BCCI has been eager to not take the T20 league to UAE but the current situation is forcing them to contemplate even the worst-case scenarios. The board has reportedly thought of conducting the entire league in Maharashtra as the Plan B. However, the possibility of the league being held in UAE once again hasn't been ruled out.

Complete IPL 2022 schedule: Reports of the BCCI looking to prepone the start of the league had emerged a few days ago, with the board thinking about getting the league started in the last week of March.

It has also been learned that the two new franchises -- Lucknow and Ahmedabad -- will be given after the IPL GC meeting.

"The two teams have been cleared and we will issue the Letter of Intent (LoI) after tomorrow's GC meeting. The teams are through by all practical purposes," IPL chairman Brijesh Patel had told Cricbuzz on Monday.

The dates for the IPL auction are expected to be made public after the GC meeting.
