The Ministry of Education has issued a list of guidelines to combat heatwaves for school-going students.

The Ministry of Education on Wednesday, May 11, 2022, released a list of precautions for schools to combat the ill effects of the heatwave. School timings need to be modified as well as the daily routine. School hours can be reduced and can start as early as 7 am.

"Sports/other outdoor activities which expose students directly to the sunlight may be appropriately adjusted in the early morning," said the ministry. Further, the recommendation of reduced timing of the school assembly was mentioned. Also, light food should be consumed. Classrooms should be properly ventilated. Uniforms should also be comfortable.

Guidelines are also released for examination centres to avoid heatstroke.

The ministry of education has released guidelines in other areas as well, including transportation, health, food, classroom, and uniform, among others.

School vans and buses should not be crowded

Water and first-aid kit should be available in the bus.

Students who travel to school by themselves should cover their heads.

 

HYDRATION GUIDELINES FOR SCHOOL STUDENTS

Students are advised to carry their own water bottles, caps and umbrellas and use them when out in the open.

Drink an adequate amount of water.

DO'S AND DON'TS ISSUED FOR SCHOOLS

Do’s and Don’ts regarding heat waves should be displayed at prominent places in the school. These may include the following:-

DO'S

  • Drink sufficient water- even if not thirsty
  • Use ORS (Oral Rehydration solution), homemade drinks like lassi, torani (rice water), lemon water, buttermilk, etc to keep yourself hydrated
  • Wear lightweight, light-coloured, loose, cotton clothes
  • Cover your head by using a cloth, a hat or umbrella, etc
  • Stay indoors as much as possible
  • If you feel faint or ill, see a doctor immediately.

 

DON'TS

  • Do not go outside on an empty stomach or after consuming heavy food
  • Avoid going out in the sun, especially in the afternoon if not required
  • Avoid strenuous activities when outside in the afternoon
  • Do not eat junk/stale/spicy food.
