When Kartik Aaryan arrived in cinemas post pandemic with his Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2, the horror comedy was one of the first films to do encouraging business of over Rs 185 cr at the box office after the lockdown eased. From 2022 till this year, a lot has changed at the Hindi box office front, with Shah Rukh Khan re-writing records and two films which took the trade by surprise– Stree 2 and Animal. All eyes are now on Kartik Aaryan again as he gears up for Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3, but the actor says he is not taking any “pressure”.

The Rajkummar Rao-Shraddha Kapoor starrer emerged as the highest grossing Hindi film of all time, while Ranbir Kapoor-led Animal broke into the Rs 500 cr club last year. The two films, both non-Khan starrers, raised the box office ceiling signaling many that humongous numbers were possible even without the presence of the industry’s long-standing superstars.

In an interview with Indianexpress.com, Kartik was asked if the conversation around box office and especially the performances of the two films have now put him under the spotlight to deliver big.

“There is mathematics behind it. Like what is the team, what was their last film, what is their next, who is the audience coming to see? Is it the biggest date of the year, are there many holidays in the run? There are several calculations, which you as well as the industry is looking at. When these things are well calculated, you don’t take the pressure of it.”

Kartik explained that box office and a film’s release date window isn’t a level playing field for everyone. In his journey, Kartik said, he has never been handed success on a platter.

“In my journey, I’ve never had anything handed to me. I had to make the plate myself; no one came to me with a platter. No one got me a Rs 500 cr director when I started, I worked with all debut directors. So, I haven’t been that lucky, but I know from where my margin can rise. If I am still giving that number, I am content with that.

“I am not comparing; I am not complaining. I am in a good space, because nobody knew me when I came to the city and now, I am recognized in every corner in the country. That’s something to be grateful about,” he added.

Bhool Bhaulaiyaa 3, directed by Anees Bazmee, also stars Vidya Balan and Madhuri Dixit. The film will release on November 1 and have a box office face off with Rohit Shetty’s Singham Again.
