Mumbai Boat Accident Highlights: Thirteen persons, including one Naval personnel and two staffers on a Naval speedboat, lost their lives after the Navy craft lost control and hit a ferry off the Mumbai coast. The ferry boat was carrying nearly 110 passengers from Gateway of India to Elephanta Island. The incident took place around 4 PM. Search and rescue efforts were immediately launched by the Navy in coordination with Indian Coast Guard and Mumbai Marine Police, according to a statement from the Indian Navy.

How did the accident happen? The Navy craft was undergoing engine trials and lost control, according to the statement. After this, it collided with the passenger ferry Neel Kamal off Karanja, Mumbai. So far, 99 survivors have been rescued, the statement said, with four naval helicopters, 11 naval craft, one Coast Guard boat, and three Marine Police boats pressed into action.

What did Defence Minister, Maharashtra CM say? Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh offered condolences to the bereaved families and said that “extensive search & rescue efforts are ongoing by the Indian Navy & Coast Guard, deploying multiple assets, to locate missing persons”.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh each to the kin of the deceased. He also said the Navy and state government officials will probe the mishap.
