Umar Khalid Delhi Riots Case: A Delhi court on Wednesday granted seven days’ interim bail to former JNU student Umar Khalid in the larger conspiracy case of the Northeast Delhi riots to attend his first cousin’s wedding and meet his relatives.

In his interim bail plea, Khalid had stated that his cousin was getting married on January 1 at Masjid Ishaat Islam at Abul Fazal Enclave in New Delhi followed by a nikah and dinner at Kalindi Kunj. He had further stated that the haldi and mehendi functions would be held on December 30 and 31 and mentioned that he would like to meet his relatives, specifically his sister, who is coming from the US. Khalid had also submitted that he did not wish to attend the reception at Nagpur and would remain in Delhi.

Shahdara District Court Additional Sessions Judge Sameer Bajpai granted the relief, permitting Khalid to be out of jail from the morning of December 28 till the evening of January 3, 2025, on furnishing a personal bond of Rs 20,000.

As per his bail conditions, Khalid should only meet his family members, relatives and friends; should remain at his home “or at the places where the ceremonies of marriage as mentioned by him will take place”; and should not use social media.

Khalid, along with others, is facing allegations of a pre-planned conspiracy to allegedly cause riots in northeast Delhi between February 23, 2020, and February 25, 2020. He has been booked for offences under the Indian Penal Code, Prevention of Damage to Public Property (PDPP) Act, Arms Act, and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).

Khalid had moved the trial court seeking interim bail even as his regular bail plea remains pending before the Delhi High Court. A division bench of the Delhi High Court had heard Khalid’s bail plea on December 6 where his counsel had argued that of the 34 offences against him, he has “already completed the sentence or have undergone more than half of it” in the said offences.
