INCOIS confirmed that the 8.8-magnitude earthquake off Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula poses no tsunami threat to India. A separate tremor in the Bay of Bengal also caused no danger. The Indian Ocean remains unaffected, with authorities urging calm.

Hyderabad: Hyderabad-based Indian National Center for Ocean Information Centre (INCOIS) on Wednesday confirmed that the powerful 8.8-magnitude earthquake that struck off Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula, poses no tsunami threat to the Indian mainland or the broader Indian Ocean region.

Earlier, due to the 8.8 magnitude earthquake, advisories across the Pacific, including parts of Japan, the US (Alaska, Hawaii, California, Oregon, Washington), and other Pacific islands, were issued.

On Wednesday, the INCOIS alert on social media said “No Tsunami threat to India in connection with this earthquake. INCOIS detected detected an earthquake of M 8.0 on 30 July 2025 at 04:54 IST (29 July 2025 at 23:24 UTC) @ Off East Coast of Kamchatka (Location: 52.57 N, 160.08 E) NO TSUNAMI THREAT to India in connection with this earthquake.

There was another 6.3/6.5 magnitude earthquake that rocked the Bay of Bengal and Nicobar Islands on July 29, 2025. However, INCOIS, which is the country’s Tsunami early warning sytem, ruled out any tsunami threat from that event as well.
