Scammers are targeting people searching online for LPG bookings, spreading fake advertisements through social media and messaging apps to deceive consumers

The war in West Asia involving the United States, Israel and Iran is rippling through global energy markets, raising concerns about possible fuel supply disruptions. Amid fears of shortages, demand for LPG cylinders has shot up in several parts of India.

As concerns grow over possible delays in cylinder availability, many households are becoming anxious about securing their cooking gas supply. This atmosphere of uncertainty has also created an opportunity for cyber criminals, who are attempting to exploit public anxiety for financial gain.

yber Criminals Exploiting Public Anxiety

Officials say fraudsters have begun launching new types of scams specifically targeting people searching for LPG cylinder refills. With demand rising and rumours about supply disruptions spreading online, cyber criminals are trying to take advantage of people’s fear and urgency

Authorities warn that scammers are particularly targeting individuals who search online for gas booking services. By monitoring popular search trends and social media conversations, fraudsters are positioning themselves to trap unsuspecting consumers.

Fake Advertisements Circulating On Social Media

In recent days, misleading advertisements have begun circulating across social media platforms and messaging applications. These fake promotions claim to offer fast or guaranteed LPG cylinder delivery during periods of shortage.

The messages often feature attention-grabbing phrases such as “Immediate Gas Cylinder Delivery" or “Emergency Extra Cylinder Supply". By presenting these offers as urgent solutions to a supposed supply crisis, scammers attempt to pressure people into acting quickly.

Such deceptive promotions are commonly shared through WhatsApp forwards, SMS messages and other messaging platforms, allowing them to spread rapidly among users.

Fake Links And Advance Payment TrapOfficials warn that these messages often contain links to fake websites designed to resemble legitimate gas booking portals.

Victims are typically asked to make an advance payment online in exchange for immediate cylinder delivery. Fraudsters rely on the fear of possible shortages to push consumers into transferring money without verifying the authenticity of the service.

Once the payment is made, the scammers disappear — leaving victims without the promised cylinder and without their money.

Authorities Urge Citizens To Stay Alert

Cyber security officials say that messages promising emergency gas supply or special delivery in exchange for advance payments are often fraudulent. Citizens are advised to remain cautious when dealing with such offers online.

Experts stress that people should avoid clicking on suspicious links received through unknown messages or social media forwards. Even if the offer appears urgent or attractive, it is essential to verify its authenticity before taking any action.

Use Only Official Platforms For Gas Booking

Authorities recommend that consumers book LPG cylinders only through official websites or mobile applications of authorised gas companies or registered gas agencies. These platforms ensure secure transactions and reliable delivery.

Consumers are also advised never to share sensitive financial information with unknown individuals. Details such as bank account numbers, OTPs, UPI PINs, debit or credit card information, or any other confidential data should not be disclosed under any circumstances.

Cyber experts warn that entering such information on fraudulent websites can allow criminals to access personal financial data, which may lead to unauthorised transactions and financial losses.

Immediate Action If You Become A Victim

Authorities emphasise that anyone who falls victim to such scams should act immediately. Prompt reporting can sometimes help prevent further financial loss and assist investigators in tracking the criminals involved.

Victims are advised to contact the National Cyber Crime Helpline by dialling 1930, which has been set up to respond to cyber fraud complaints and provide immediate assistance.

Complaints can also be registered through the Government of India’s National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal.

Importance Of Public Awareness

With demand for cooking gas cylinders rising in some areas, experts say public awareness is more important than ever. Even as rumours about supply shortages circulate online, citizens must remain vigilant while making LPG bookings.

Authorities stress that the safest way to avoid such scams is to rely only on official booking channels and ignore suspicious advertisements or messages promising urgent delivery. By staying alert and verifying information carefully, consumers can protect themselves from falling victim to these increasingly sophisticated cyber scams.
