All owners of houses, shops, offices and other business establishments in Chennai are required to pay property tax twice a year
With the March 31 deadline approaching, the Greater Chennai Corporation has reminded residents and commercial property owners across the city to clear their property tax dues on time to avoid penalties and late fees.
The civic body said property owners who fail to pay the tax within the stipulated period will be liable to pay additional charges, including interest on the outstanding amount. Property tax in the city is calculated primarily on the basis of the building’s annual rental value, with the government prescribing minimum and maximum base tax rates per square foot depending on whether the property is categorised as residential or commercial.
All owners of houses, shops, offices and other business establishments are required to pay property tax twice a year. Delays in payment attract penalties, and taxpayers will have to clear the pending amount along with the applicable interest.
To make the process easier, the Corporation has enabled digital payment options so that residents do not have to visit offices in person. Property owners can now pay the tax through WhatsApp by saving the official number 9445061913 and selecting the “Property Tax" option under the “Most Used Services" menu.
